In preschool, we work on the formation of capital/upper case letters. Developmentally, at age four, our little hands and brains are ready to make big lines and big curves. Slanted lines and little curves are a bit harder, but we will learn to make those as well.
Our writing program Handwriting Without Tears was designed by an occupational therapist who is an expert in how little hands develop. We start by forming our letters with wood pieces, playdough, and then writing them on small chalkboards. After we can build our letters using all these methods THEN, we will practice writing them with a small pencil or little crayon. You will hear your child say things like "Big line down, frog jump up, little curve, little curve" (Letter B). Click here to learn all the ways your child will learn to write letters!
All of our writing practice in preschool will be in uppercase letters. Don't worry; we will have lots of time to learn to write lowercase letters in Kindergarten and beyond! If you would like to help us learn to write our letters and numbers, please use the guides below. The words we use to explain each step is included as well.
